The Detachment Paradox is intended to help today’s white-collar workers lead happier and healthier lives while working in jobs that demand considerably more of them than the traditional expectations of a 40-hour work week. To this end, it offers seven ways that corporate employees can reclaim their ‘personal space’ and identities. The paradox is that by learning the art of psychologically detaching from their employment, readers will actually end up becoming more productive, better-adjusted employees.
The reader is first encouraged to formulate a personal mission and vision, and given practical guidance in doing just that. Additional exercises are devoted to cultivating one’s "collection of connections" – the people options that can help insulate an employee against the ever-present threat of termination, as well as the benefits of maintaining one’s sense of humor as a way of helping sustain both physical and mental health, and sharing experiences with others – particularly through mentoring.
